Subject: West Albany High School Student Arrested - Manufacture and Possession of a Destructive Device

News Release from: Albany Police
WEST ALBANY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ARRESTED - MANUFACTURE AND POSSESSION OF A DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE
Posted: May 24th, 2013 2:19 PM

On Thursday, May 23, 2013, at about 10:26 p.m., Albany Police Investigators took 17-year-old Albany resident Grant Alan Acord into custody and lodged him at the Linn Benton Juvenile Detention Facility on the following charges:

* Possession of a Destructive Device (2 counts).
* Manufacture of a Destructive Device (2 counts).

Grant Acord, a West Albany High School student, was taken into custody without incident at his residence in the 2400 block of NW Violet Street. This investigation began after the Albany Police Department received information that associated Grant Acord with manufacturing a destructive device with the intent of detonating it at a school.

Evidence of manufacture and possession of a destructive device was found at a residence associated with Grant Acord in the 2600 block of NW Raymond Court. Members of the Oregon State Police Explosives Unit responded to the residence in order to assess the safety risks associated with the items found at the residence.

On Friday, May 24, 2013, members of the Oregon State Police Explosives Unit ensured the safe removal of items from the Raymond Court residence after a search warrant was obtained.

Ensuring the safety and security of our community, residents and schools is the number one priority of the Albany Police Department. The Albany Police Department is coordinating this investigation with assistance from the Benton County District Attorney's Office, Oregon State Police, Benton County Sheriff's Office, Greater Albany Public Schools (GAPS), and Albany Fire.

An initial security search was conducted at West Albany High School on the evening of May 23rd. The initial security search will be followed up by a more extensive school search, which will include the use of an explosives detection K-9 from the Oregon State Police, to ensure that the campus is safe for students return to class on Tuesday, May 28, 2013.

This case is in its early stages and will continue until a thorough and comprehensive investigation has been completed. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Albany Police Detective Unit at 541-917-7686.
