Health Curriculum
Quality health education is characterized by standards-based instruction and provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy lives–both now and in the future, as their needs change throughout their lives.
In Greater Albany, we teach the Oregon Health Standards using the following instructional materials:
- The Great Body Shop and Fight Child Abuse in grades K-5
- Glencoe Teen Health in grades 6-8
- Open Educational Resources in grades 9-12
More information about Oregon’s approach to health education can be found on the Oregon Department of Education’s Health Education website.
Human Sexuality
According to Oregon Law (OAR 581-022-2050) and Board Policy IGAI, the school district shall provide an age-appropriate, comprehensive plan of instruction focusing on human sexuality, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, and disease prevention in elementary and secondary schools as an integral part of health education. Erin’s Law requires an age-appropriate child sexual abuse prevention program.
- Elementary and Middle Schools will provide parent/guardian notification at least 7 days prior to lessons on human sexuality, including instructional resources/materials information, topics covered in the learning activity, the Oregon Health Standards, and information on requesting an alternate activity.
- High Schools will provide a course syllabus at the beginning of the academic term that includes instructional resources/materials information, topics covered in the learning activity, the Oregon Health Standards, and information on requesting an alternate activity.
Parents/Guardians may request that their child be excused from sexuality education components of our instructional program under the procedures set forth in Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) 336.035(2) and Board Policy IIAA with its Administrative Rule, IIAA-AR:
- First, contact the teacher and/or school administrator to review the instructional materials, discuss the learning activities, and discuss alternate activities.
- If you would then like to excuse your child from a sexuality education lesson(s), contact the teacher and/or school administrator in writing with the following information:
- the materials/activities that you wish to be excused
- the reason for desiring this change (brief)
- the requested alternative activity
Please be as specific as possible about which parts of a unit and/or which health standard. We are grateful for your partnership as we work together to help our students grow into healthy adults.
