Board Appointment Information

At the April 20th Regular Board Meeting, Board Chair Ryan Mattingly announced his resignation from At Large Position 1 effective April 30, 2026. Following Board Policy BBE, the Board declared the position open. The Board appointed Director Taylor and Director Lunceford to lead the appointment process including finalizing process for board approval and making an appointment recommendation to the Board. The term of the appointment will be through June 30, 2027.
School board members are dedicated volunteers who champion for public education in their communities. Board members attend one to two board meetings, events (student all stars and graduation) and other board obligations per month. In addition to meetings and events, board members prepare for the board meeting by reviewing the board packet, meet monthly with the superintendent and participate in onboarding and training. The most important responsibility of the school board is to work with the public to improve student achievement in their local schools. Their duties include but are not limited to:
- Employing the superintendent
- Developing and adopting policies, curriculum, and the budget
- Adopting collective bargaining agreements

Eligibility Requirements
To Be Eligible, Applicants Must:
✔ Live in the district for at least 12 months
✔ Be a registered voter within GAPS boundaries
✔ Be at least 18 years old
✔ Not be an officer or employee of the district
Candidate Qualities
The Board will select the appointee with the following qualities:
- The candidate should have personal integrity, intelligence, and appreciate the values of good education.
- The candidate should be willing and capable of assuming the required responsibilities.
- The candidate should have the ability to work with others and be a champion of all our district schools.
- The candidate should be prepared and willing to devote significant time to the study of the problems of education in the district, as well as the state and nation at large, so as to be able to interpret them to the electorate.
- The candidate must be willing and able to make sacrifices of their time and expertise for the benefit of the district.
